Standing Committee to meet in Helsinki
The Standing Committee (*) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will meet in Helsinki, at the Finnish Parliament, on Friday 23 November 2018, on the occasion of the Finnish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers (November 2018-May 2019).
After the opening of the meeting by PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier, the Speaker of the Eduskunta (Parliament of Finland), Paula Risikko, will welcome participants. The parliamentarians will then hold an exchange of views with the Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Timo Soini, who will chair the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers for the six-month period. The discussions will focus on Finland's priorities during its Chairmanship and other issues in the framework of the Assembly's ongoing political dialogue with the Committee of Ministers.
The parliamentarians will also hold an exchange of views with Anna Rurka, President of the Conference of the INGOs of the Council of Europe.
Other items on the agenda include the procedure for the election of judges to the European Court of Human Rights, the protection and promotion of sign languages, the provision of palliative care in Europe, the movement of international students across Europe as well as the recent observation of the elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Georgia.
(*) The Standing Committee, which acts on the Assembly's behalf between plenary sessions, is made up of the President and Vice-Presidents of the Assembly, the chairpersons of political groups, the chairpersons of national delegations and the committee chairpersons, totalling some 60 parliamentarians from the Council of Europe's 47 member States.
The meeting of the Standing Committee, which is open to the press, will take place on Friday 23 November from 9 am to 16.30 pm at the Parliament of Finland (Eduskunta) in Helsinki.
