Committee on Assembly reform to be established

On 8 October, the PACE Bureau approved the composition of an Ad hoc Committee on Assembly reform which it had decided to establish, in line with the recommendation made by the Presidential Committee at its meeting in Rome on 7 September. The Bureau nominated Jean-Claude Mignon (France, EPP/CD) as Chairperson of this ad hoc committee, which will include members of all political groups. More

PACE President and delegation to attend a papal audience

The members of PACE Bureau, led by the PACE President, Mevlüt Çavusoglu, will be received today for an audience with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. “We are deeply grateful to His Holiness for granting this audience”, said President Çavusoglu the day before the audience. He pointed out that the Holy See enjoyed observer status with the Council of Europe, and that it shared the Organisation’s and its Parliamentary Assembly’s faith in the value of the human being. Albania: PACE Bureau calls for resumption of political dialogue in Parliament

PACE Bureau, meeting this morning in Strasbourg, adopted the following declaration: “The Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is concerned about the continuing political crisis in Albania following the June 2009 parliamentary elections, notwithstanding the partial return of opposition Socialist MPs to the Albanian Parliament after the visit of PACE’s Presidential Committee to Tirana in February this year". International Day of Democracy: declaration by the PACE Bureau

To mark its support for the UN International Day of Democracy on 15 September, PACE Bureau adopted the following statement: “The world’s celebration of the UN’s International Day of Democracy touches a special chord with the Council of Europe and its Parliamentary Assembly. Sixty years ago, in 1949, the Council of Europe was created by ten European countries trying desperately to recover from the onslaught of nazism and fascism and the horrors of World War II, in order that Europe would never again experience such a negation of basic human values and rights."
